Are you about to remake your space?
I’m so excited for you! Whether its a remodel, spring cleaning, or a total reorganization of the space, these first steps will make the project cleaner, easier, and overall much more successful. Let’s get started!
Clean up any messes
If there are any messes in your home that you’ve been meaning to get to, go ahead and clean them up before you launch into anything else. Messiness can get in your way and be so distracting when you’re trying to tackle your big project.
Plus, just cleaning up those basic messes can help you feel so much better about your home and yourself! So clear the table, sweep the floor, take out the trash, fold your clothes and do those dishes! Ready? Now, on to the fun stuff!
Deciding what not to keep
Take a look around your house and identify the things you no longer need. We outgrow our stuff all the time! If you don’t use it, you don’t need to keep it! Maybe it’s broken, or no longer matches your style. Maybe the dog chewed it up or you have two or three of the same thing! Gather all these items in a bucket or a box, or even a big trash bag, get them collected and out of the way. You can give these items away or sell them, but don’t leave them in your house!
Okay, but what if I really like an item that has no use? Should I chuck it? Maybe, but consider that it is okay to have a few things just because they’re pretty, or because they remind you of fond memories. That really can be purpose enough. This said, too many keepsakes and little reminders, if scattered haphazardly around your home can easily become distracting, disorganized clutter in the space.
So, if you pick something up and you think you might want to keep it but can’t quite decide, try asking yourself these questions:
- Why do I want it?
- Is it broken?
- Do I have something else that serves the same purpose?
- Am I willing to take proper care of it?
- Will it be helpful to me?
- Does it make me happy?
- Do I really have space for this?
Be honest with yourself!
Challenge yourself to answer these questions truthfully, and if you aren’t sure, ask a friend! Outside perspectives can be so helpful when trying to make decisions when we may be biased.
I recommend going to each room in your home and considering the items that are there. Don’t overdo it, but try to get rid of a few things that you know you just don’t need, or wont use. Give them away, sell them, or throw them out.
Once that’s done, you should be all ready to remake your space!
